The starting point for learners is the C.B.T (compulsory basic training) This is a course run by training bodies such as Alan Clark Rider Training approved by the Driving Standards Agency ( DSA ). We can supply bikes, radios, helmets, in fact everything you need to get started. The next step is to decide which licence you want. There are 2 types. A light motorcycle licence (A1) which restricts riders to any bike upto 125cc and a power output of 11kW. The practical test must be taken on a bike between 75cc and 125cc. Or standard motorcycle licence (A) which can be obtained by passing a test on a bike of between 120cc and not more than 125cc. This licence will restrict you to a bike of up to 25kW for 2 years. After that you can ride any sized bike you want. If you do not want to wait 2 years to ride any size bike, you can opt for the Direct Access Scheme ( DAS ) This again is a course that can only be run by approved training bodies such as Alan Clark Rider Training. This course is for 5 days for those with little or no experience and is conducted on a 500cc machine using bike to bike radios. ( It should be noted that test candidates who only have a provisional licence will need to take a theory test before they can apply for a practical test.) |
